72h in Amsterdam

Amsterdam receives over 5 million visitors per year. Its stunning canals, biking culture, laid back atmosphere, museums and history make it an enriching destination for any traveler.

Although it is relatively small in size, it packs enough entertainment, historical relevance, art and beauty to keep you busy and stimulated.

This 72h in Amsterdam guide is meant to help you make the most of your time in this magical city.

Day 1

schipol international airport amsterdam

Arrive at Schiphol International Airport!

This airport is not in the city; therefore, either take the train or book private transportation.

Amsterdam is known for its biking; once you drop off your baggage, it is time to hop on a bike and explore this exciting city!

The first stop on your biking adventure is to visit the Albert Cuyp Markt. It is located in the De Pijp neighborhood and is the most popular market amongst locals as well as tourists.

Stimulate your senses and taste buds with its wide range of food options. You can also find clothing and souvenir sections.

Wandering around local markets is a unique and authentic way to explore new cities and get a taste for the culture.

De Negen Straatjes

de negen straatjes amsterdam

The best place for shopping is called De Negen Straatjes, translated as “the nine streets.” I would avoid the big chain shopping at the Kalverstraat and opt in for De Negen Straatjes. Amsterdam is loaded with independent boutiques and vintage shops.

The nine streets are a perfect place to find these shops. Located in the middle of the canal-belt in the Jordaan, this area is lined with cafes and Instagram-worthy pictures.

Grab a coffee during your shopping spree while feeling awe struck with how gorgeous the canals are up close in person.

Lunch at Will Gaanstra Friteshuis

will gaanstra friteshuis amsterdam

You can’t come to the Netherlands without tasting their delectably delicious fries! Will Graanstra’s patakraam (fries stall) is the place to be.

Open since 1956, the restaurant is one of the city’s oldest and finest. They are open from Monday to Saturday and specialize in fresh-cut potato fries to order. Keep it simple with mayonnaise or ketchup, but get there early, as they can sell out!

Fun Fact: As you wander around the canals, you may be curious about the water. The Artis Zoo gives elephants drinking water straight from the canals, as the water is pure.

Vondelpark

vondelpark amsterdam

The most famous park in Amsterdam is called Vondelpark. Hop back on your bicycle and cruise around this green oasis. If the weather is nice, take a pit stop and lay in the grass or take a nice siesta after your lunch.

A’dam Tower

At this point, you may want to return your bike or keep it moving. In the summer months, Amsterdam experiences a late sunset, so it is perfect for biking in the evening. In the colder months, however, you may be ready to try out the public transport or take a refreshing walk.

This tower is located in Amsterdam Noord, overlooking the waterfront across the river IJ. This tower, home to a number of music, advertising, and event companies, was formerly the headquarters of Shell. There are also hotels, bars and restaurants in this popular destination.

Refer to the skybar for a cocktail and enjoy the sprawling view from above.

Dinner at De Foodhallen

Creative and dynamic street food and food trucks have been popping up in cities all over the world.

Foodhallen is an eclectic mix of international food that will delight your taste buds. It is food heaven. There is something for everyone: burgers, Vietnamese street food, pizza, Mediterranean cuisine, Mexican, Spanish tapas and much more.

Although it may be hard to decide what your palate craves with all of the exciting options, the beauty of this dinner is the variety it provides

for you and your friends. You can all choose different meals, scan the hall for the perfect drinks, and even share some sweets. Foodhallen is bustling, and you may find yourself there for hours after your busy day.

Fun Facts: De Foodhallen was opened in October, 2014 and was the Netherlands´ first indoor food market. There are 21 food stalls on the third floor of De Hallen. This building was once a train hub, as it was formerly a tram depot from the 1900´s.

Day 2

dutch windmills amsterdam

Dutch Windmills and Countryside Day Trip from Amsterdam (also includes cheese tasting in Volendam)

This day trip will take you out of the bustling city and out into the countryside, where you can experience Dutch culture in a different way.

The first stop on this tour is in a small fishing town called Marken. This town is known for preserving traditional Dutch culture.

You will learn about the history of this special place while you take a walking tour along the charming streets. Wooden shoes may come to mind when you think of the Netherlands.

During this tour, you will visit a wooden shoemaker to see a craftsman at work, demonstrating the fine skill of wooden shoemaking.

Next on your adventure is a boat trip where you will journey to Volendam while admiring the lovely view of Lake Ijssel. Upon your arrival in this traditional Dutch fishing village, you will have free time for exploration on your own.

There are beautiful shops lining the picturesque water and quaint architecture. Capture yourself in the traditional Volendam costumes, still worn during folkloric events.

After your free time fun, meet back with the group for a set three course meal. The restaurant is along the dike; nothing like wonderful food with a stunning view!

Another quintessential Dutch treat is of course cheese. The next stop in your tour is a little town called Edam, which is famous for its cheese. This cheese has been enjoyed around the world for centuries and now it is your turn!

Lucky for you, this tour also includes a cheese tasting at a local cheese shop here in Edam; savor the rich, delicate cheeses in this scenic town. Wander the cobblestone streets and gaze upon the bridges and cute homes along the canals. This town is like being inside of a Dutch postcard.

Fun Facts:Edam has a rich history as a former shipyard and it´s home to one of the Netherland´s largest churches called the Grote Kerk (you will see this on your walking tour).

Cheese and wooden shoes can be checked off your Dutch to-do list, but there is another hallmark of Dutch culture that we haven´t explored yet: windmills.

Your next destination on this thorough tour is in the province of Zaandam, where you will visit the neighbourhood of Zaanse Schans. On the drive to Zaandam from Edam, be sure to observe the beautiful countryside.

This famous area is home to a wonderful collection of well-preserved, historic windmills. In addition to these iconic landmarks, this area is also known for picturesque homes, wooden barns and scenic meadows.

Get up close and personal by visiting one of the windmills by foot, exploring the inside as you discover the importance of this piece of Dutch culture.

Zaanse Schans completes your authentic Dutch excursion. You will now make your way back to Amsterdam.

Fun Facts:What were the Dutch windmills traditionally designed for? Grain milling, corn milling, and land drainage are a few of the traditional functions. At one point in Dutch history, more than 10,000 windmills were spread across the landscape and they were fully operational.

Dinner at Kitchen & Bar van Rijn

Located at Rembrandtplein, this restaurant is both affordable and delicious. The interior is modern, spacious and stylish.

This restaurant is also known for its sumptuous cocktails. Fancy a fun night out after dinner? You are in the right place!

Rambrandtplein is hopping with cafes, pubs and clubs, making it the perfect hot spot for some after dinner fun.

Day 3:

gs jordaan amsterdam

Brunch at Gs Jordaan

Popular amongst locals, this is the spot for an American style brunch. If you partied a little too hard the night before, you are at the right place. Offering many savory dishes, healthy options and various comfort foods, this delectable brunch will wipe your hangover away.

The most popular dish among the locals is the chicken waffle burger. Their funky, fresh and provocative vibe makes this a fun way to spend a few hours.

They also make over a dozen Bloody Mary´s. I don´t know about you, but that would certainly make me book a table! I would recommend booking a seat in advance:

Canal Cruise & Rijksmuseum

canal cruise amsterdam

Why not combine the popular and must-see Rijksmuseum with an authentic canal cruise?

With our combination tickets, not only do you get a discount, but you avoid the long lines at the Rijksmuseum. This combo saves you time and money!

Fun Fact:Rijksmuseum has recently reopened after a 10-year and €375 million refurbishment. This magnificent Gothic and Renaissance building is home to the work of numerous Dutch masters from the Golden Age.

Lunch at Moeders

stamppot amsterdam

At Moeders (Mothers), you must try the “Stamppot.” Mashed potatoes, bacon, cabbage and sausage combine for a decadent, comforting meal all topped off with an extra meatball.

The décor is warm and lovely, featuring photographs of customer´s mothers.

The vibe is down to early and cozy, just like the food. Just note that the portions are huge, therefore you may want to skip the appetizer.

The Red-Light District Walking Tour

red-light district amsterdam

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without the vibrant, sultry Red-Light District. It is obviously a must see on your trip.

This tour takes you to the area that is synonymous with Amsterdam, De Wallen (Red Light District). Endless narrow old streets, canals, windows with the famous red-light glow and monuments all comprise this neighbourhood.

The well-known Zeedijk street used to be one of the most dangerous streets in Amsterdam, as sailors frequented its dark alleys looking for amusement.

Although it used to be seedy, nowadays instead of shady bars, you will find lively and welcoming Dutch pubs and restaurants. The walking tour includes the entrance to the Museum of Prostitution where you can take a look behind the scenes and listen to the authentic women´s secrets from their point of view.

Please note that your safety is guaranteed during this excursion in the “darker side” of Amsterdam. The trustworthy guides will ensure your safety for the duration of this tour.

If you fancy continuing your night after the tour, there are bars all over the place. It is touristy, but you will surely have a fun and entertaining evening. If you are looking for bars less wild, simply walk beyond the canals to the next area.

Your time in Amsterdam has come to an end. I hope you have had a fabulous time and that this guide was helpful and informative.

Amsterdam is a city that brings travellers back, so I am sure this won´t be your last experience here.
